In the only real surprise at this year's MTV Video Music Awards, Panic! at the Disco picked up a moon man for video of the year. Now they could take home a Woodie. The pop-punk band, making waves with the radio hit "I Write Sins Not Tragedies," will vie for a "Woodie of the Year" award — yes, they make those — along with Angels & Airwaves, The Academy Is, Atmosphere and Gym Class Heroes at the third annual mtvU Woodie Awards. The event, presented by MTV's college channel to honor acts favored by the dorm-room set, will take place Oct. 25 at Roseland Ballroom in New York. The show will air Nov. 2 on mtvU (8 p.m. EDT). The Arctic Monkeys and Imogen Heap lead with three nominations each, and will compete in the "Breaking Woodie" (best new artist) and "Streaming Woodie" (most downloaded song) categories. Heap, who generated buzz for her 2005 album "Speak for Yourself," is also up for a "Left Field Woodie," awarded to artists who "resist all classification," the network said. Her competitors are Gnarls Barkley, Gogol Bordello, Lady Sovereign and Wolfmother. The big-name acts for "Alumni Woodie" include the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fiona Apple and Ghostface Killah. Viewers can vote on the awards' categories through Oct. 20 by visiting the network's Web site http://www.mtvu.com or by accessing its programming on their mobile phones. http://panic-rock.com

Panic! At The Disco have been discussing their second album. The band is currently recording the follow-up to 2006's A Fever You Can't Sweat Out in Nevada's Mount Charleston studios. Guitarist Ryan Ross said the album would have a theme running through it. He added: "We all get together and created this--I guess you could call it a concept--that we all wrote and we were all involved with and pretty interested in. "It's kind of a love story. It's a timeless age of romantic, poetic fantasies." The band is working with Rob Mathes, who worked with the band on the re-release of The Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack. However, the band's management would not confirm Mathes as producer. Ross told MTV that the band have four songs finished, and will continue to work on the album in an unnamed studio in Los Angeles.
